ENERGY INSECURITY: NUCLEAR FUSION - THE KEY TO ENERGY PRODUCTION?

As a grandmother of two toddler girls, I worry about our planet’s energy options. Most of us in the United States are aware of the dangers of fossil fuels and coal. So, I began researching the possible options that are seriously being considered as solutions to our ever-mounting energy concerns regarding climate change. US scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Ignition Facility in Livermore, California plan to make an important groundbreaking announcement regarding nuclear fusion on Tuesday, December 13, 2022. Could this be the news our global society has been waiting and hoping for; an end to air and ground pollution? Will we no longer be slaves to the coal industry?

“Advocates for fusion technology hope that the source – which, as is often said, uses the same principle for energy production as our sun – will replace less efficient sources of clean energy, and even provide long-term power for space travel.”[1]

“In October 2021, the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy published its strategy on nuclear fusion. This form of energy, it notes, will be abundant, efficient, carbon-free, safe, and will produce radioactive waste much shorter-lived than that of current nuclear power stations.”[2]

My layman’s understanding of the process in its simplest terms is that two atoms typically a (hydrogen isotopes) unites to form a molecule of helium, releasing energy in the form of photons, which is visible as light. The sun uses the same scientific process to generate heat and energy. Ignition is the goal, a process of energy sustainability. The challenging issue, is to create an environment in which the positively charged ions are dense enough so that they can collide, giving off heat. However, the real problem with ignition seems to be maintaining the heat source for extended periods, long enough to transfer this vital energy source into viable delivery systems.

The use of fossil fuels and coal has left us no choice, we must seek out safe, and more efficient ways to produce the worlds energy needs.

Let us as citizens of the world, ensure the ecological survival of our planet, support Nuclear Fusion.
